Sewer Line Replacement In Windsor, Ontario

Old clay sewer pipe exposed at the bottom of a trench running toward the street

Sewer line replacement means digging out the old pipe that carries wastewater from your house to the City sewer and laying a new one. In Windsor that pipe belongs to the homeowner all the way to the main. We dig, lay new pipe on a stone bed at the right slope and restore the ground. The excavation is fully insured.

Sewer Line Replacement details

Windsor Homeowners Pay For The Whole Sewer Line

The City of Windsor says the homeowner owns the private drain connection from three feet inside the house to the municipal sewer. That usually puts part of your sewer line under the boulevard or the road. When it fails, the sewer line replacement is yours to arrange.

Common signs are slow drains on the lowest floor, gurgling toilets, sewage backing up into a floor drain, and roots found during a camera inspection. A camera inspection is the best first step, because it shows exactly where the pipe has cracked, sagged or broken.

Older Clay Pipe Is Common In Windsor's Older Neighbourhoods

Many homes built before the 1960s in Walkerville, Ford City, Sandwich and Riverside may still have their first clay sewer pipe. Clay pipe comes in short pieces, and tree roots find their way into every joint. Clearing the roots buys time, but new pipe ends the problem.

The new pipe is solid plastic with sealed joints. It is laid at a steady slope on a bed of stone and covered with more stone before backfill, so it stays straight as the clay around it moves.

The City Of Windsor Sewer Rebate

Windsor's Private Drain Connection Replacement Program is open to homes with up to two units. It can pay a rebate of up to $4,000, or up to half the cost when the house is the owner's main home and connects to a sewer on a main road or a sewer at least 18 feet deep. The program has two routes, and both have rules about which contractors can do the work, the permit and a final City inspection.

Before you sign with anyone for a sewer line replacement, ask the City's Right-of-Way office at (519) 255-6257 for a sewer information sheet and the current list of contractors who qualify. That way you know which route gets you the rebate.

Sewer Line Replacement Pricing

Sewer line replacement costs depend on depth, length and whether the road has to be opened. A short sewer line on private property often costs $1,850 to $6,000, and long, deep lines that cross the boulevard and road can cost much more. The written quote lists the length, the depth and every part of the work, including restoration.
