Excavation Cost details

Typical Excavation Cost By Job

These ranges come from Canadian price guides published in 2026. They are market figures, not our prices, and your written quote is the real number.

Foundation excavation for a new house often runs $7,500 to $30,000. Exterior waterproofing costs $100 to $300 per linear foot, or $15,000 to $25,000 for a full house. Weeping tile replacement runs $80 to $200 per linear foot. A yard French drain usually costs $2,000 to $10,000, and lot grading and site prep cost $1,000 to $10,000. Driveway excavation runs $1,500 to $5,000 before the stone.

What Raises Excavation Cost

Depth raises excavation cost more than anything else. A deeper trench takes longer to dig, needs sloped or supported walls, and moves far more soil. Wet Windsor clay adds to that, because it is heavy to truck and often cannot go back in the hole.

Tight access raises excavation cost too. A narrow side yard, a deck, a fence or a mature tree in the way can mean a smaller machine, more hand digging or extra restoration. Work under a boulevard or a road adds permits and restoration.

What Lowers Excavation Cost

Good access lowers excavation cost. A clear path for the machine, a place to stockpile soil on site and a dry season all help. Combining jobs also saves money, such as doing waterproofing and weeping tile in one excavation, or a water line and a sewer line in the same trench where the rules allow.

Rebates help as well. The City of Windsor has programs that can pay part of a sewer line replacement and part of a backwater valve or sump pump installation, each with its own rules.

A Written Quote Shows Your Real Excavation Cost

The only way to know your excavation cost is to have the job measured, and that measuring visit is free. Our free site visit looks at the depth, the length, the access, the soil and the restoration. The written quote then lists each item, so you can compare it fairly with any other excavation quote.
