French Drain Installation In Windsor, Ontario

Gravel-filled French drain trench running across a lawn with drain pipe in the stone

A French drain is a trench filled with clear stone and perforated pipe that carries water away from a wet area of the yard. We dig the trench at a steady slope, line it with filter fabric, lay the pipe in stone and finish the top with stone or sod. Our drain excavation work is fully insured.

Why Yards In Windsor Stay Wet

Windsor yards sit on clay, and clay lets water through very slowly. After a heavy rain or a spring thaw, water pools in low spots, along fences and beside driveways, and it can sit there for days. Low ground near the house can also send that water toward the basement.

A French drain gives the water a fast path through the clay. The stone fills with water, the perforated pipe collects it, and the pipe carries it downhill to a place where it can drain away.

Where A French Drain Can Send The Water

The outlet is the most important part of French drain installation, because a French drain only works if the water has somewhere to go. Water can go to a swale, a dry well, a ditch or another approved spot on your own property. It should never be aimed at a neighbour's yard. We check the slope of your lot with a laser level before we dig, so the drain flows the whole way.

Some Windsor homes also need their downspouts disconnected from the sewer. A French drain or a splash pad can take that roof water instead, as long as it drains away from the house and your neighbours.

French Drain Installation Next To The House

A drain along the house is different from one out in the yard. Close to the foundation, the job is really weeping tile work, and the drain has to sit beside the footing. Our weeping tile replacement page covers that work.

French Drain Installation Pricing

French drain installation in a yard usually costs $2,000 to $10,000, depending on length, depth and how far the water has to travel. A short drain across a lawn is at the low end, and a long drain with a dry well is at the high end. The written quote lists the length, the stone and the outlet.
