Why Driveways Crack In Windsor

Most driveway failures start below the surface. Windsor clay holds water, and when that water freezes and thaws, the ground moves. A thin base over clay lets that movement push up through the asphalt or concrete.

Driveway excavation removes the old surface and enough soil to make room for a proper base. We lay filter fabric where the clay is soft, then add crushed stone in layers and pack each one with a plate compactor or roller.

New Driveways And Curb Cuts Need A City Permit

In Windsor, a new driveway or a new curb cut needs a Right-of-Way permit from the City's Engineering Department. The permit comes with a fee, a deposit and two inspections: one of the base before paving and one of the finished work. New driveways must also be hard surfaced to City standards.
